It’s been a little over two months since we said hello. Time for an update on where things actually stand.
The biggest structural change: PIM can now run as a real server. Point PIM Server at a machine you leave running — a home server, a small box for the family — and connect to it from a thin client on any other machine, phone included, right from a browser. That’s new since July; back then PIM was one process on one machine, full stop. It’s also what made the next piece possible: a private profile per person sharing that server, so a family or small team can run one PIM without seeing into each other’s journal, mail, or history.
We also spent a real stretch of the last few weeks doing something less flashy but, we think, more important: going through every single app in PIM — todo, calendar, diary, notes, mail, and the rest — and checking each one against the actual best tool in its category. Not “is this good enough,” but “would someone coming from Todoist or Day One or Google Calendar actually find what they expect here.” A lot of what we found wasn’t glamorous — a missing edit button, no way to search old diary entries, no timezone support on the calendar — and we closed all of it. AI is the thing none of those other tools have. It was never supposed to be an excuse for the ordinary parts falling short, and now it isn’t one.
Mail got the deepest look of anything, because we think it’s the app where PIM’s whole idea — one AI that actually knows your life, not a chatbot bolted onto the side — matters most. Every real email you see now comes with an AI summary above the full text, you can talk to the AI about any of them, and it’ll draft a reply with you. What goes into PIM’s memory is only what you actually decide matters — skip an email and it’s simply gone, never remembered at all.
